Ants can be quite a nuisance for homeowners here in Central Florida. Finding even one in your home is just cause for anxiety, because you know where there’s one there’s many not far behind. So, what attracts ants to your home or business?
In this article, we’ll go over the common reasons why you might have ants, and what you can do to prevent them.
What Do Ants Want?
Ants can enter through the tiniest of cracks and make themselves at home. But why do they do this? What are they looking for? It’s quite simple. Ants are constantly searching for three resources and are unwavering in their pursuit of them:
- Food: Most species of ants crave sugar. That’s why they can often be found near sweet residues. Soda spills, unrinsed dishes, and unsealed garbage bins are all broadcasting delicious scents inviting ants inside. Ants also are attracted to fats and proteins, so really any uncovered food source is at risk of ants – including pet food.
- Water: Ants, just like any other animal or insect, need water to survive. Leaking pipes, poorly ventilated bathrooms, and poorly ventilated basements/attics can all be sources of water for these tiny creatures.
- Shelter: While they may be tiny creatures, they can do big damage if they decide to take up residence in your home. Ant colonies found in walls have been known to chew through wood, insulation, and even electrical wire.

How Can I Prevent Ants?
Prevention is the name of the game when it comes to ants. As tiny as they are, it is nearly impossible to fully prevent ants from coming inside if they think your home has what they need.
However, there are a few steps you can take to help prevent major ant infestations:
- Weather-sealing doors and windows
- Repair cracks and gaps in walls/floors, and leaking pipes
- Clean food/drink spills as soon as possible
- Keep food- including pet food – in sealed containers
- Do not leave uneaten pet food in bowls
- Rinse dishes thoroughly before leaving them in the sink
- Empty trash cans regularly
- Air out bathrooms after a shower/bath
