Schedule an inspection when you hear noises, notice droppings or unusual odors, find damaged soffits or vents, or suspect activity in your attic or walls. An early inspection can help identify the problem before wildlife activity causes additional damage or more extensive repairs are needed.
Squirrels may chew soffits, fascia, vents, or other roofline materials to create or enlarge an opening. They often enter attics for shelter, nesting, or food storage and may continue working at a vulnerable area until they gain access.
Common signs include scratching, scampering, chewing, or rolling sounds during the daytime, especially around sunrise and late afternoon. You may also notice nesting materials, droppings, stored food, chewed wiring or wood, damaged soffits, or squirrels repeatedly using the same roofline opening. Because other wildlife can create similar noises, a professional inspection is the best way to identify the animal and determine how it is entering.
Squirrels may reproduce up to twice per year, commonly producing young during late winter or early spring and again during the summer. Exact timing can vary by species and weather conditions. This matters because removing an adult without checking for dependent young could leave babies trapped inside the attic. The inspection and removal process should always account for the possibility of a nest.
Squirrels can damage soffits, fascia, vents, insulation, ductwork, wiring, and belongings stored in the attic. They may also chew electrical wiring and create a potential fire hazard. Urine, droppings, nesting materials, and stored food can also contaminate attic areas and cause unpleasant odors.
Yes. Removing a squirrel does not prevent the same squirrel—or another one—from using the opening again. Squirrels may also continue chewing or enlarging weak areas around the roofline. Properly sealing entry points after the animals have left is essential for long-term protection.
A complete squirrel exclusion begins with an inspection to identify the activity, nesting areas, and accessible entry points. Forest installs a humane one-way device that allows squirrels to leave the structure while preventing them from returning through that opening. Once the squirrels have exited, the device is removed and the identified entry points are sealed with durable materials. When appropriate, bio-remediation may also be recommended. An annual exclusion maintenance agreement is also available to inspect covered repairs and identify new entry points that may develop.
Yes. Florida bats are beneficial wildlife, and it is illegal to kill or harm them. The lawful method of removing bats from a building is exclusion, which allows them to leave safely while preventing them from returning. Bat exclusions must follow Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission requirements and seasonal restrictions.
Attics, soffits, and roof cavities provide bats with warmth, shelter, darkness, and protection from weather and predators. Bats need very little space to enter and may access a structure through small gaps around rooflines, vents, soffits, flashing, or other construction openings. Once a roost is established, bats may continue returning unless accessible entry points are properly addressed.
Signs may include bats entering or exiting around dusk, squeaking or rustling sounds, dark staining around an opening, odors, and accumulations of guano. Because bat guano can sometimes resemble rodent droppings, we recommend an inspection to correctly identify the wildlife before determining the appropriate course of action.
Accumulated bat guano can contaminate soffits, attics, and roosting areas and may create noticeable odors. Disturbing contaminated material can release dust into the air. Environments containing bird or bat droppings may be associated with the fungus that causes histoplasmosis, so guano should not be disturbed without appropriate precautions.
Florida’s legal bat-exclusion period generally runs from August 15 through April 15. Bat maternity season runs from April 16 through August 14, when exclusion is generally prohibited without a permit. Exclusion devices must be properly installed, remain in place for at least four nights, and be used when the forecast overnight temperature is at least 50 degrees. Homeowners who suspect bat activity should schedule an inspection to confirm the appropriate timing and removal process.
During the maternity season, young bats may not yet be able to fly. If adult bats are allowed to leave but prevented from returning, dependent pups could become trapped inside the structure. Waiting until the legal exclusion period helps ensure the young bats are capable of leaving with the colony. This protects the bats while reducing the risk of dead animals, odors, and bats entering the home’s living areas.
Forest’s bio-remediation service uses professional products to help disinfect, sanitize, and deodorize areas affected by wildlife activity. Bio-remediation does not include the physical cleanup or removal of droppings, nesting materials, damaged insulation, deceased animals, or other debris. It also does not include insulation cleanup, removal, or replacement.
Homes change over time due to weather, normal wear, construction movement, roof repairs, or new wildlife damage. An annual exclusion maintenance inspection verifies that covered repairs remain intact and helps identify new entry points before they become larger problems. If wildlife reenters through an area previously repaired by Forest and covered under the maintenance agreement, removal is performed at no additional charge in accordance with the agreement’s terms.
