How Do You Know It’s Fire Ants?
In Central Florida, we only have to worry about red fire ants. Black fire ants also exist, but not currently in our region. Here’s how you can identify fire ants:
- Reddish-brown in color everywhere but their abdomen which is translucent brownish-black
- Range in size from .05 inches to .2 inches
- Active in the morning or late afternoon
- Build nest mounds on the ground that average up to 2 feet in diameter and up to 1.5 feet high
- Venomous bite
- Highly aggressive and will swarm if their nest is disturbed
Carpenter ants, commonly referred to as red ants, are often mistaken for fire ants. These lookalikes do bite but are much less aggressive and not venomous. If you or a member of your family has been bitten by an ant, it may be worth inspecting your property to search out and destroy any presence of fire ants.
While inspecting your property, don’t be too quick to dismiss a small mound – some fire ant colonies build small mounds then dig intricate tunnels that can extend up to 25 feet away!
